Butter naan/ flat bread

Who doesn't love naan!? Naan with paneer gravy is one of ma favourite combo. If I don't feel like having anything special in a restaurant, straightaway I will go for naan and some gravy...my comfort corner! Recently I thought of making naan bread at home and fortunately it turned out perfect. The process is little long but the result is worth the effort. You will get soft fluffy naans to have with any yummy gravies. This can be easily made on a tawa/in an oven.

Yields : 6-7 naans/flat breads

Ingredients:
1. Plain flour/Maida- 2.5 cups
2. Active dry yeast- 3/4 tsp
3. Baking soda- 1/4 tsp
4. Baking powder- 1/4 tsp
5. Oil- 2-3 tbsp
6. Yogurt/curd- 2.5 tbsp
7. Lukewarm water- 1/2 cup
8. Sugar- 1 tsp
9. Salt- to taste
10. Butter- 2-3 tbsp melted

* If you don't have baking powder, you an replace it with baking soda.

Method:

1. Dissolve yeast and sugar in lukewarm water. Let it soak for 10 mins or more until it becomes frothy like in the second pic.

2. Add maida/plain flour and all the dry ingredients including salt. Mix well. Then add oil, curd and yeast-sugar mixture to the bowl. Knead them. It will be little sticky that's fine.

3. Cover the dough with a damp towel/ or the bowl with cling film and let it rest for 3 hrs for fermentation.

4. After 3 hrs it will be fermented like in the first picture. Give a rough knead.

5. Make 6-7 equal size balls. Dust the surface with dry flour and roll them a bit thick. Heat the  tawa and when it is ready, place the naan.

6. Close the tawa with a lid for 1-2 mins then turn over to the next side and continue the same until both sides are cooked and puffed well like in the second picture.

* You can also cook naan in an preheated oven at 260 deg by placing it on a pizza/baking stone or on a baking tray lined with aluminium foil. Bake them for 30 mins. You can either bake it all at once or by each. If you are baking by each, wait for 2-3 mins for oven to regain the heat and then place the next naan.

* Those who don't like yeast can skip it and do the rest of the part.

Finally brush the naans with melted butter and serve them with any north Indian cuisine gravies. Enjoy!
